This project involved the new construction of a 4 bedroom, 3.5 bathroom single family home on a tight, steeply sloping green field lot in Sausalito. The challenging site required many retaining walls and drilled piers to shore up the surrounding grade and support the main structure. The residence has contemporary finishes and many green elements, including radiant heating, solar thermal and solar electric systems. Upon entry, clerestory windows frame views across the canyon. A vertical fireplace hearth connects all three levels. Board formed concrete is used to establish a strong base that anchors the large expanses of glass and floating roof. Concrete is revealed throughout the house to highlight the means of hillside construction. The home's windows are placed to allow natural light to flood the house while maintaining privacy.
